Measure the vibration values of fans and motors

Ordinary equipment

Usually we think that fans and motors are very common equipment. But we have neglected them to provide important airflow for industrial processes, providing cooling, heating, humidification and dehumidification functions for office buildings, convention centers, cinemas, entertainment venues and hotels. Although the fan and motor are different in shape and size, their failure modes are similar. Their bearings are often overlooked or overworked, and lack of overheating or improper use. In this way, the bearing wear deteriorates and vibration starts to occur. Measuring vibration values and analyzing their failures can prevent catastrophic failure modes as shown.

Regular vibration measurements are the basis for any preventative maintenance measures using a portable data logger and a permanent online vibration detector. Measurements, drawing trend graphs, alarming and analyzing vibrations of fans and motors can provide early warning of faults and order replacement parts in advance. Bearings can be replaced during regular maintenance to avoid irreparable failures.

Vibration sensor

Acceleration vibration sensors are usually mounted at important locations on the bearings of the motor and fan. Since the bearing is the main load-bearing component of the mechanical drive, the acceleration vibration sensor should be mounted on the input and output bearing brackets to measure the vibration value.

The vibration sensor should be mounted in the radial (vertical and horizontal) and axial positions of the bearings of the motor and fan. This will achieve the best vibration measurement results. The measured values include:

Bearing vibration value

Unbalanced

Misalignment

Electronic fault

Blade speed product perturbation (aerodynamic interference)

Belt frequency

Permanent installation

Permanent installation of accelerometers is usually recommended using adhesives or studs. Both installation methods require the installation plane to be prepared in advance.
